Reading Glasses on Book

About Me

My name is Dev Patel, and I am the founder of the Visual Humanitarian Aid (VHA) Global Initiative. At sixteen years old and a sophomore in high school, I am deeply committed to a mission that began with two life-changing experiences—one in my home country of the United States and another during my first visit to India.

The spark for VHA ignited on a family road trip to North Carolina when I accidentally left my glasses behind. What began as a minor inconvenience quickly transformed into a profound realization. As the world blurred into indistinct shapes and muted colors, I became aware of how transformative eyecare is in people's lives.

Just months later, a trip to India illuminated the vast scale of this issue. While visiting relatives in Gujarat, I played cricket with local boys and noticed one struggling to hit the ball. His gaze darted everywhere, and it became clear he might have myopia, just like me. When I asked, he admitted he couldn’t see well but didn’t want to burden his family financially. With my parents' help, we arranged for him to visit an optometrist and receive glasses. Seeing his world transform added to my realization of how life-changing access to vision care can be.

These moments revealed a universal truth: millions across the globe face barriers to essential eye care. From children unable to learn effectively due to undiagnosed vision problems to adults unable to work at full capacity, the lack of access to corrective lenses perpetuates cycles of inequality and missed opportunity.

I am fortunate to have a family that prioritizes my vision care, but countless others aren’t as lucky. VHA Global Initiative was born out of the belief that everyone, regardless of their background, deserves the chance to see the world clearly. Our mission starts in India, addressing the urgent need for affordable visual aid in underserved communities, with the goal of expanding worldwide.

By providing glasses and advocating for accessible eye care, I aim to bridge educational gaps and empower individuals to live fuller, more vibrant lives. Together, we can bring clarity to the world, one pair of glasses at a time.
